Brica Reveals New All-In-One
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Misc. Tech, Movies, Music, Portable Audio / Video,
Brica has come out with an All-In-One that sounds cool but may be just too good to be true. It features a Video Recorder that creates 320 x 240 ASF files from DVD or TV, a 2 megapixel still camera, an image viewer that displays JPGs, an FM mono tuner, a sound recorder for MP3 files, an eBook Viewer that can read TXTs, and a PictBridge connection for printers. Available in black or silver at a price of $265.00, what even disturbs us more than its meager capacity of 512 internal memory is the combination, for we remember how difficult it was to repair our ailing TV/VCR combo when the recorder only needed a new belt.

Joost has finally announced that they are now open for business. This means that if you are a beta tester you can now issue invitations for all your buds to join up as well. How truly clever of them to distribute it by word of “mouth.” Spokesperson Brian Baumly also told Gear Live that Turner will be distributing content such as CNN, Adult Swim, Sports Illustrated, Sony Pictures, and the NFL on their service. I would personally invite all Gear Livers to relish in the glories of this free online television, if I could just remember my password.

Philips Remote Stands Up

This remote may teach you that it is better to stick one control on a book shelf than to lose three in your sofa cushions. Designed by Chen Hung Ming in Taiwan, the Philips Book Style Remote has 3 “pages” to choose from for DVD, TV, and audio devices. It even features labeled attachments so you don’t have to keep reminding yourself which part of the remote to press. Contact Chen & Karlsson for price and availability. If we could just remember to put it on the shelf in the first place, we might just relieve some of the clutter of double issue TV Guides we can’t seem to discard.

Mediterranean Home Theater Feeds Your Head
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Home Entertainment, Movies, Music,
We’ve shown you how to take your home theater outside or make it look like the Titanic, but if what goes in your stomach is as important is whats on the screen, then this Mediterranean-style theater may be more to your liking. Designed by Sound Components of Florida, the room features burgundy drapes and carpeting, with toast-shaded chairs and woodwork. It also contains a 73-inch rear-projection screen, a 110-inch dropdown filmscreen, and a Maranz DLP projector.
The real fun begins before you even reach the cozy retreat. On the way there, the alley allows you access to a huge DVD/CD collection, popcorn, coffee, a candy counter, and an entire wine collection. We say salut to that one.

Not merely content to sit by while the highly awaited “Spiderman 3” movie is released May 4, Activision is also planning to release its video game at the same time. The plot is basically the same, as our web-fingered hero has to deal with the Sandman as well as his own dark side. Sales of the first two Spidey games pulled in about $300 million for the company, according to game research company NCD. This one is available for almost every game system out there, so contact Activision if you want to stay in the loop.

Steve McQueen’s Ferrari is On the Auction Block
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Movies, Transportation,
Another celeb’s car is up for grabs. This time it is Steve McQueen’s chestnut brown metallic 1963 Ferrari 250GT Lusso. It is now owned by Mike Regalia of Thousand Oaks, CA, who restored to its original specifications, including license plate. The vehicle is intended be the centerpiece of an auction in Monterey by Christie’s August 16. If you want to get in on the bidding action, be prepared for the price that they expect to collect from the auction, somewhere between $800,000.00 and $1,200,000.00 million. We think the car would make a heck of a “Great Escape” vehicle.

Pioneer Releases Dual ODD
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech, Movies,
Following in the footsteps of Hitachi, Toshiba-Samsung, and LG, Pioneer is launching a dual BD and HD DVD. In a translated interview, Shannon Yu, Pioneer’s ODD sales general manager for Asia Pacific region, stated that although at present blue-laser ODDs cost too much to become mainstream, they feel that eventually it will be worth their investment. Pioneer has given the BDC-S02 Combo a MSRP or $299.00 in an attempt to attract potential blue-laser ODD users who might otherwise be unwilling to purchase. They estimate a total sales amount of 4 million ODDs this year, which is double the total from 2006.

New Glasses Offer Select Subtitles
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Misc. Tech, Movies, Science,
For those who are hard of hearing or are afraid of missing a line or two when Jack Nicholson mumbles his way through the action, Madrid’s Carlos III University for the Spanish Center for Subtitles and Closed Captions has come up with a solution. A computer installed in the theater emits close-captioning if you are within 50 meters (~54 yards) of the screen. With the touch of an on/off button, glasses that house receptors catch the signal and project it onto a microscreen in the right lens. If you want subtitles only during select scenes, the glasses will keep up and project what is going on at that point. Now if they could just invent something that will make violence a little less of a bloodbath on screen.
